Do you understand the distinction between sadness and depression? Really, I think most people are aware of the distinction.
It’s normal to have occasional sadness. Everyone will feel depressed at some point in their lives. Sadness is a normal response to a terrible event that has occurred. Extreme depression is worse. It is a clinical condition with many more symptoms than just melancholy and can cause suicide if left untreated.
The distinction between sorrow and depression is that someone who is bothered by their feelings can logically explain what is making them unhappy, whereas someone who is depressed may not always be able to do so. Sad people are aware that their emotions will eventually start to improve. When someone has depression, their symptoms typically worsen and they can not see a way out.
Weeks, months, or even years may pass during a depression. Despite their best efforts, it is not something that a person can simply “snap out of.” Simply put, it is impossible. No one wants to be thinking about ending their life, but the sentiments are strong and overwhelming.
If a person has a loss of interest in life in their daily activities, job, relationship or socializing for more than about two to three weeks and their mood is out of character, then a visit to the doctor would be in order.
Some of the main symptoms of depression are:
- Tiredness/lethargy or inability to sleep (insomnia)
- Loss of interest in social activities and sexual relations
- Contemplating death and/or suicide
- Lack of self worth and inappropriate guilt
- Significant weight changes
- Lack of focus
If you have any symptoms, you should visit your doctor. There are screening tests are available and there are a range of them available on the internet as well.
So take care of yourself. You are the most special person there in on this planet. There is no one else even remotely like you that has your talents, skills or abilities. You simply cannot be replaced and you have important things to do with your life.
The only person you can control is yourself, so take care of yourself first and foremost. Everyone and everything else is out of your control. Start doing those things today that make you feel good. You know what they are. We’re all counting on it!
